Egypt to build 10th prison since coup

May 6, 2016 at 3:29 pm

The Egyptian authorities yesterday approved the construction of a new prison in the Qalyubia Governorate, north of Cairo.
This is the tenth prison to be built in less than three years, since the overthrow of the first democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi.

According to an official Egyptian newspaper, the Minister of Interior Magdy Abdel Ghaffar issued resolution 1923 of 2016, which stipulates the construction of a central prison in the Qalyubia Governorate.
Egyptian human rights researcher, Ahmed Mufreh, said: “The new prison is the tenth prison for which an official order is issued ordering its construction in the past three years.”

“The legal department in the Egyptian prison system is leaning towards allowing executive authorities, especially the interior minister, to issue decisions regarding the establishment of private prisons. The number of these prisons is unknown and they are not subject to the same judicial and legal monitoring as other types of prisons.”
