National dialogue and lifting US sanctions revive Sudan, says opposition leader

The secretary-general of Sudan’s opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP) has said that the concurrence of political agreement and the lifting of the US economic embargo have revived the country, Quds Press reported on Friday.

“They usher in a political and economic breakthrough,” added Ibrahim Al-Sanusi. “After the results of the national dialogue, there is no justification now to remain outside of the government.”

He noted that the previous decision not to take part in the government was based on two things: “The first is that we did not want to be partners with the National Congress in a bilateral government, and the second is that we did not want to be part of a short transitional government without a programme and based on partition.” Today, he suggested, there must be a national unity government of “90 parties” which have been around for three years or more.

The opposition leader pointed out that they had proposed three issues to be the basis of the upcoming government: “Unleashing freedoms, creating the position of prime minister and choosing governors by election.”

Al-Sanusi insisted that the results of the national dialogue pushed the US administration to lift its twenty year-sanctions on Sudan.
