Yemen yesterday called on the international community to help it clear landmines planted by the Houthi militia during the two-year war, the Anadolu Agency reported.

In a statement published by the Yemeni news agency Saba, the government said that the Houthis and their allies, led by ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh, planted landmines in the areas they controlled, including in houses, streets, farms and other vital facilities.

The statement also said the landmines resulted in the death and injury of hundreds of civilians, including women and children after they returned to their homes.

“We urgently call for supplying the Yemeni army with the needed technological equipment used for clearing landmines, explosives and war ordnance,” the statement said, noting that the Houthis and their allies used “internationally banned mines”.

It also called for the international community to put pressure on the Houthis in order to stop the group using these mines.
