Arab League to send over 100 observers to monitor Algerian elections

At least 100 observers from the Arab League will arrive in Algeria by the end of this month to observe the legislative elections scheduled for 4 May, a senior official said yesterday.

The Head of Election Affairs Department at the Arab League, Hadia Sabri made her remarks after a meeting with head of Algeria’s High Independent Authority for Election Monitoring, Abdelouahab Derbal.

She explained that her visit aims to follow up with preparations for the legislative elections, noting that the rest of the delegation will arrive in Algeria at the end of the month.

In this regard, she stressed that the selection of the observers will be based on a set of criteria such as “competence, experience and age diversity” and will be distributed through the 48 mandates according to the specified schedule, noting that the delegation will include several Arab nationalities.

The upcoming legislative elections will witness the participation of 12,591 candidates.
