Hundreds of Syrian children were treated to an iftar, the break fast meal during Ramadan, amidst the rubble of their destroyed town, shocking pictures shared on social media have shown.

The pictures, taken in the besieged city of Douma on Sunday, showed tables filled with various foods surrounded by rubble and bombed out homes.

“We would have normally been cautious to host such events due to airstrikes, but we are taking advantage of the latest de-escalation deal,” an official from the Adaleh Foundation, which organised the event, told the BBC.

Seven cooks participated in preparing nearly 1,800 kilogrammes of food including rice, peas, meat, appetizers and juices for 600 people under the supervision of about 15 officials from the organisation.

One resident said previously such meals would have been “hidden in mosques, fearing strikes”.

The city of Douma has been under siege by the Syrian regime’s forces since 2013.

Years of air and ground attacks have caused widespread destruction to the city.
