Russia ‘seriously concerned’ by US practices in Syria

June 21, 2017 at 1:08 pm

Russia is “seriously concerned” by the United States’ actions in Syria, Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said yesterday.

“The situation linked to the coalition’s actions is seriously concerning, of course,” Peskov told local reporters.

The spokesman denied the Kremlin’s knowledge of the details of a plan developed by the US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, on ties with Russia.

“As far as the Tillerson plan, which we do not know about but the media do, then I suppose it is better to ask our colleagues from the foreign ministry,” Peskov told reporters.

US media revealed on Monday that Tillerson had presented a classified document which it said would help restore relations with Moscow at the request of President Donald Trump.

Commenting on Russia’s position on cooperation with the United States to ensure aviation safety in Syria, Peskov said: “The defence ministry is the only body that will decide if Russia should resume work to this agreement.”

Yesterday, the Russian Defence Ministry announced the suspension of work on the aviation safety agreement in Syria after a Syrian army plane was shot down by a US jet.

The US-led coalition said the Syrian aircraft attacked Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) positions near Raqqa.
