Officials from Sudan and Brazil have met in Khartoum to discuss trade and investment opportunities and cooperation projects, Sudan’s official news agency SUNA reported.

According to SUNA, the meeting between Dr Awad Ahmed Al-Jaz, the deputy chairman of the National Committee for Relations with the BRICS countries, and the Ambassador of Brazil to Sudan, José Mauro da Fonseca Costa Couto, focused on partnership projects in agriculture and scientific research.

Al-Jaz said the meeting identified in excess of 200 projects that could lead to a productive partnership between the two countries. He said Brazil and Sudan stood to mutually benefit from the vast array of investment opportunities.

The meeting followed the establishment of a joint committee for political consultation that was convened in November 2016 and comes two months after talks at the foreign ministry designed to pave the way to strengthen economic and political ties between the two nations.

It is now hoped that private Brazilian investors can be identified and invitations can be extended to senior figures from both countries to meet and finalise projects in mining and energy as well as agriculture.

Brazil has become one of the major countries in the export of various agricultural products and according to estimates at the end of 2011 its investment in Africa amounted to $15 billion.
