June 21, 2017 at 12:30 pm

More than 80,000 Syrian refugees have left Turkey to go to Syria for the Eidul Fitr holiday this weekend, Masralarabia.com reported on Tuesday. The Turkish authorities have issued exit permits for the refugees to cross the border into territory controlled by the Syrian opposition.

After completing administrative measures with the opposition authorities, it is expected that many refugees will try to go back to their homes destroyed by the regime.

The Turkish government announced on 10 May that it will facilitate the crossing at a specific border post between 13 and 23 May. The same post will be open for the return journey on 28 June and for 14 days thereafter.

According to the UN refugee agency, Turkey hosts the largest number of refugees in the world; 3 million have sought refuge there from Syria.
