Israel issues administrative detention orders for 84 Palestinians

Since the beginning of August Israeli authorities have issued 84 administrative detention orders against Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails without charge or trial, a report by the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) revealed yesterday.

PPS reported that Israeli authorities have also issued an administrative detention order for a Palestinian Legislative Council (PLO) member in Jerusalem, Mohammed Abutair, adding that he has spent over 34 years in Israeli prisons.

Forty-seven of the detention orders were new while the remaining 38 were renewal orders, the PSS noted.

Israel issues administrative detention orders against Palestinians on the basis of classified evidence which is not even disclosed to the detainees’ lawyers.

This practice has been repeatedly condemned by international organisations, including the United Nations and human rights watchdogs, as a violation of civil and political rights.

Israel is currently holding 6,500 Palestinians in 22 prisons and detention centres, 56 of whom are women; 350 are minors, 13 are PLO deputies, and 500 are held under administrative detention.
