Egypt and Sudan hold high-level military talks in Cairo

Egypt and Sudan have stressed the need to strengthen relations, cooperation and coordination in various fields, especially security, in an attempt to boost stability in the region, Quds Press has reported. This was the outcome of high-level talks between Egypt’s Defence Minister, Major General Sedki Sobhy, and his Sudanese counterpart General Awad Mohammed Ahmed Awaf held on Sunday in Cairo.

Local reports say that the two senior officials discussed a number of issues of mutual interest to the armed forces of both countries. No further details were given about the specific topics looked at.

Both men stressed the strong relations between Cairo and Khartoum, and their willingness to strengthen partnership and cooperation between them in all domains. The intention is to look after the common interests of the two countries. Sobhy and Awaf also emphasised the importance of cooperation to face the challenges and changes affecting the region, and to support the efforts to provide security and stability for all people across the African continent.

The discussions came about amid increasing tension in the relations between the two countries. This is a result not only of the dispute over the land in the Halaib triangle, which Sudan accuses Egypt of occupying, but also due to Sudan’s accusations of Egypt supplying Khartoum’s opponents with weapons, as well as the difference in attitude toward Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam, military updates in Libya and relationships with Qatar.
