Israeli officials operating at a political level are behind the arrest and continued detention of Sheikh Raed Salah, his lawyer has told Quds Press. “This,” said Khalid Zabarqeh, “means that obtaining his release will be very difficult.” He ruled out any hope that the head of the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel would be released after the court hearing scheduled for Thursday.

The Magistrates’ Court in the illegal Israeli settlement of Rishion Litzzion extended the detention of Sheikh Salah on Monday until 24 August.

“The Israeli Public Prosecution Service accused Sheikh Salah of inciting terror based on remarks he is alleged to have made as he delivered a Friday speech following the end of the violence took place around Al-Aqsa Mosque,” the lawyer explained. “As expected, the Public Prosecutor requested the extension of Sheikh Salah’s detention for four days and the court did this.”

Zabarqeh placed the responsibility for an attack on Sheikh Salah in prison on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet ministers. Three criminals attacked the Palestinian leader and threatened him in front of Israeli prison officers, who did not intervene.
