A former Kurdish lawmaker in the Iraqi parliament, Sarwa Abdul-Wahid, announced yesterday her candidacy for the post of President of the Republic of Iraq.

“I announce my candidacy for the post of President of the Republic of Iraq in accordance with the Iraqi constitution” Abdul-Wahid said in a press statement, stressing that faith in the Constitution begins with the application of equality and justice for all Iraqis without exception.

She pointed out that the post allows Iraqis to protect the constitution and consolidate national unity explaining that “this position did not give women the opportunity to take over sovereign positions, although the Constitution ensured equal opportunities and partnership”.

“I run today as a Kurdish Iraqi, independent of any political party, and without the support of any political party and without political consensus. However, I run and represent all the Iraqi national forces and women who are being marginalised by some parties” she said.

The Iraqi Parliament announced 25 September as the date for nominees to run for the post of President of the Republic of Iraq.
