The European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini yesterday called on the Saudi authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and cooperate fully with the Turkish authorities in the case of missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

“We expect and we hope that there will be transparency and full clarity on what happened,” Mogherini told reporters in Luxembourg.

Earlier, Saudi King Salman Bin AbdulAziz ordered the kingdom’s prosecutor to open an internal investigation into Khashoggi’s disappearance.

King Salman’s decision came after US President Donald Trump threatened Riyadh with “severe punishment” if Khashoggi has been killed.

According to Turkish reports, Ankara has audio and video recordings which prove that Khashoggi was killed and his body was dismembered; which Riyadh denies.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, went missing on 2 October after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman has been accused of being involved in his murder.
