Chief of Hamas’ Political Bureau Ismail Haniyeh has said that Gaza will remain a guard for Egypt’s national security.

Speaking to the editorial staff of Egyptian newspaper Al-Masri Al-Youm yesterday, Haniyeh explained that “Palestinians and Egyptians maintain deep and strong and relations and Gaza will remain a guard for Egyptian national security”.

During a visit to the newspaper’s head office in Egyptian capital Cairo, Haniyeh extended his movement’s congratulations to Egypt for being elected head of the African Union, wishing the Egyptian president Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi success in his new position.

Haniyeh added that Hamas – which governs the besieged Gaza Strip – would continue coordination with the Arab countries, first among which would be Egypt, to uphold Palestinian principles and fulfill the aspirations of the Palestinian people.

Haniyeh briefed the journalists and reporters on developments and challenges facing the Palestinian cause in light of the current circumstances in the region.

About Hamas’ priorities, he said: “Hamas’ efforts are currently concentrated on supporting the Palestinian people, upholding their rights, enhancing their steadfastness and resistance until liberating Palestine and returning to their hometowns and villages from where they were expelled in 1948.”

Haniyeh added: “Then, the Palestinian people will establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.”
