SUMMARY:The Survey of Western Palestine Revisited: the visible and the hidden
DESCRIPTION:Conducted by the Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF) between 1871 and 1878\, and first published in 1880\, The Survey of Western Palestine was described rightly as the most accurate map of Palestine at the time. It remains the most comprehensive survey until the end of the 19th century and even later for some purposes. By careful revision of the maps\, Dr. Abu Sitta has compiled a new 500-page atlas at a 1:25\,000 scale\, correcting the mistakes made in the original\, which were sometimes as much as 0.5km to the east. Many Arabic names were corrected\, keeping the English spelling as is\, for historical accuracy\, and many manuscript field traces from the PEF archives which contain valuable data not reflected in the published Great Map are restored and added. By tracking the development of the maps from field traces and name books to composite maps in London\, to the final publication of the Great Map it is possible to understand the evolving thinking towards the final product. The greatest value of the Survey of Western Palestine is the lessons we can learn from the creation and subsequent use of the maps.\n\nAbout the speaker \nDr. Salman Abu Sitta\, is the Founder and President of Palestine Land Society\, London\, an organisation dedicated to the documentation of Palestine’s land and People. Website www.plands.org. Dr. Abu Sitta is the author of six books on Palestine including the compendium Atlas of Palestine 1917- 1966\, English and Arabic editions\, and the Atlas of the Return Journey\, as well as over 300 papers and articles on the Palestinian refugees\, the Right of Return\, history of al Nakba and human rights.\nTickets can be booked by phone (0207 935 5379) or email collections@pef.org.uk. Places are limited\, so book in good time to ensure your space.
