Army officers' oath of allegiance amended to remove loyalty pledge to president

Adly MansourInterim Egyptian president, Adly Mansour, appointed by the military coup, issued a presidential decree to amend the army officers' oath of allegiance.

Presidential decree number 562 removed the phrase in which army officers pledge loyalty to the president in the oath.

According to the decree's first article, new army officers should take the following oath, "I swear to God to be a loyal soldier to the Arab Republic of Egypt, to keep it safe and secure, to defend it on land, in sea and air, inside and outside the republic, to obey military orders, to carry out my leaders' orders, to maintain my weapon and not to leave it until I die."

The decree was published in the official gazette on Wednesday.
