The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is entirely asymmetric

MEMO to The Financial Times

RE Article: Israel warns of escalation in Gaza

Dear Editor,

According to Tobias Buck, "Hamas also has a strong incentive to avoid another full-on military confrontation with Israel" (Israel warns of escalation in Gaza, Nov 11), which suggests that Hamas has the capability of having a "full-on military confrontation". Of course, "the group that has controlled Gaza for more than five years," as Mr. Buck puts it, ignoring Hamas's democratic credentials as the elected government, has no such capability. Perhaps it is too sensitive for your Jerusalem correspondent to say that what may ensue will be another extended military exercise with the Israel Defence Forces venturing unopposed into civilian areas causing death and destruction on the way, as happened in 2008-9. Heaven forbid that he says what most of us have known for a long time, namely that the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is entirely asymmetric and not a contest of equals in any way, shape or form. Hence the need for Israel to denounce those who, quite legitimately, oppose its military occupation as "terrorists" and thus claim that it acts only in "self-defence" which, as the occupying power, is completely untrue. It would help if some context was given to your readers so that they can judge for themselves who the aggressor really is in the Holy Land; it might also equip Mr. Buck to be more objective in his reports.
