German Foreign Ministry: arming the Syrian opposition threatens Israel

The German Foreign Minister, Guido Westerwelle, has warned France and Britain of the consequences of arming the Syrian opposition, and stressed that there were terrorists in Syria that target Israel.

In an interview with German newspaper ‘Welt am Sonntag’ published on Sunday, Westerwelle said, “Unfortunately, there are terrorists in Syria who do not only target Damascus, but also Israel.”

He added, “Therefore, my instincts call for protecting our Israeli friends and partners. This matter is not limited to weapons, but also to modern air defence systems. If such weapons were to fall into the wrong hands, it may result in a serious threat to Israel and all civil aviation.”

Westerwelle, who met with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov two days ago, also pointed out that Moscow is not planning on supplying Damascus with missiles at the moment, and said “I explained to him (Lavrov) that we consider this matter harmful and that it will backfire. He gave me the impression that there are no plans, at the moment, for Russia to supply Syria with S-300 missiles.”
