A leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood has said that the movement’s peaceful approach will bring victory for the revolution in Egypt. Dr Essam El-Erian called on all “honourable” Egyptians to tell the coup authorities to abandon violence and take the peaceful path to political and social stability.

Speaking to Al-Jazeera Mubasher Egypt, El-Erian said, “When we stick to our peaceful approach and renounce violence, members of the Freedom and Justice Party and the Muslim Brotherhood acknowledge God’s peace.” The revolution set out to be peaceful, he added, and will follow other peaceful revolutions which were successful.

Although there are “experts in violence” who are terrorising the state at the moment, El-Erian said that the people are enduring their ordeal with patience. “Patience and persistence are stronger than bullets in the long run,” he insisted.

In a message directed to the international community, the European Parliament and the European Union, El-Erian called for an end to violence in the region. “Violence begets violence,” he said, “but it is up to the stronger party, in our case the Egyptian army, to set the peaceful example by ending its violence.”
