The field hospital in Midan Adawiya has reported that almost 200 supporters of the ousted President of Egypt, Mohammed Morsi, have been shot and killed by the army and police. More than 4,000 have been wounded, 700 of whom are described as critical.
Shortly before the dawn prayers this morning, soldiers dressed in civilian clothes fired tear gas at a sit-in near the Rabaa al-Adawiyya Mosque in Nasr City where tens of thousands of Morsi supporters have been protesting in defiance of the recent military coup. Shortly afterwards, the soldiers started shooting into the crowds of unarmed civilians.
The director of the field hospital, which has been set up near the mosque to treat the wounded, has said that supporters were killed by live bullets and most were shot in the head and neck. Many were shot at close range.
Two weeks ago, 51 of Morsi’s supporters were shot by military and police officers while they were praying at the same mosque.
On Wednesday, coup leader General Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi called on Egyptians to take to the streets to give him the mandate to fight “terrorism”, a request seen by many as part of his violent campaign against pro-Morsi supporters.
