Murdered Italian activist remembered in Gaza

Dozens of Palestinian and international members of solidarity movements took part in a solidarity gathering in the Gaza Strip on Monday. The gathering marked the second anniversary of the assassination of Italian activist, Vittorio Arrigoni.

Arrigoni first arrived in Gaza in 2008 on board a ship that had sailed to the beleaguered Sector with the intention of breaking the marine siege imposed by Israel since 2006. He left Gaza on board the ship with the other activists but later returned.

Arrigoni would take part in protests against the strict Israeli measures which undermine the work of Palestinian farmers along the borders between the Gaza Strip and Israel.

He also took part in several sea protests against Israeli restrictions placed on Palestinian fishermen and would accompany them on their makeshift fishing boats.

News of Arrigoni’s death was received on Friday, April 14, 2001.

The Palestinian government in Gaza carried out a swift and wide ranging investigation which eventually turned up the assassins. It is believed he was killed by extremists led by a Jordanian member of al-Qaeda.
