Al-Ibrahimi: a peaceful solution in Syria is necessary but beyond our reach

Al-Akhdar Al-Ibrahimi, the UN and Arab League envoy to Syria, has said that, “At the moment, a peaceful solution in Syria is not attainable, however, it is necessary.” He added, “We have two choices, a peaceful solution or the destruction of the country.”

During an interview with the “Russia Today” Channel on Monday, Al-Ibrahimi stressed the need for negotiations between the conflicting parties in Syria emphasizing the fact that neither side will achieve military victory.

The UN envoy to Syria also said, “The Syrian crisis requires a political solution” and expressed his belief that it is possible to have negotiations between a delegation representing the government, and a delegation representing the opposition. He also noted that the opposition issues a statement every five minutes declaring their unwillingness to talk to Bashar Al-Asad and, “This is the problem.”

Al-Ibrahimi went on to explain that sending arms to both sides in Syria makes it more difficult to reach a peaceful solution and pointed out that Russia sends arms to the regime. He added, “What we are facing now in Syria is a devastating civil war between the regime and the opposition.”
