Mohammed Abu-Tir, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), was released on Wednesday after spending one year in administrative detention in an Israeli prison. The parliamentarian, 55, was expelled from his home city of Jerusalem to Ramallah in December 2010, when his Jerusalem ID was revoked by the Israeli occupation authorities. He was arrested in September 2011 and served his administrative detention in Ofer Prison, to the west of Ramallah.
The Israelis accused Abu-Tair of being an Islamic and national activist. Including this year, the PLC member has now spent a total of 30 years in Israeli detention. The first time he was arrested was in 1974 when he was only 16 years old.
Following Abu-Tair’s release, there are now 14 PLC members still being detained by Israel; two belong to the Fatah bloc of legislators, one is from the PFLP and 11 are from Hamas.
