A survey on Arab-Jewish relations conducted by Haifa University Professor Sammy Samouha in 2010, revealed a bleak picture; that both Arabs and Jews living in the territories occupied in 1948 felt increasingly threatened by each other.
Among Jews, 62.7% feared that the high Arab birth rate poses a threat to Israel’s future; 32.5% of those polled supported revoking the right of Arab Israelis to vote, and 80% believed that non-Jews applying for citizenship should be required to swear loyalty to Israel as a Jewish, democratic state.
“The Jewish citizens of Israel are willing to accept Arabs and to work toward their integration into society and for equal rights, but only on condition that Arabs do not define themselves as ‘Palestinian’ and accept the Jewish and democratic nature of the state” Samouha said.
