Israel reopens main entrance to Salfit following seven years of closure

The Israeli occupation authorities have decided to reopen the main entrance to the city of Salfit in the northern West Bank. The entrance will open next week after being closed for seven years; initially, only buses will be allowed through.

The announcement was made in a written statement by the local council and followed a decision taken after a meeting between representatives of the Palestinians and Israelis. Although only buses on “round trips” will use the entrance in the first instance, this is seen “as a first step towards arriving at a natural situation for the movement of transportation in general as soon as possible”. The council also confirmed that during the meeting between the two sides, issues and problems facing citizens on many levels in the region were discussed.

Hebrew media sources revealed recently an Israeli proposal to provide “security relaxations” for the Palestinian Authority in return for the resumption of direct peace negotiations in light of the continuation of what is termed “limited settlement activity”.
