Thousands march on Nazareth in support of Raed Salah

Thousands of Palestinians in Israel demonstrated in the northern city of Nazareth demanding the immediate release of Sheikh Raed Salah, who is detained, without charge, in a British high security prison.

Arab members of the Israeli Knesset, as well as the Higher Follow-up Committee, joined the Islamic movement to demonstrate against Britain’s continued detention of Sheikh Raed. They bore placards and banners which read, “we are all Raed Salah.”

Jamal Zahalkha MK said the detention has been counter-productive as it has provided an opportunity for the British people and the world community to become more aware of the situation in Jerusalem, the threats to Al Aqsa mosque and condition of Palestinians in Israel.

In his speech to the demonstrators, Sheikh Kamal Khateeb, deputy head of the Islamic movement said he had no doubt that the detention order was given in Israel and the place of its execution was Britain. He paid tribute to Sheikh Raed Salah for his steadfast struggle and promised that ultimately, he would return to Palestine triumphant and honoured among his people.
