Safi: Syrian regime escalates violence despite its participation in Geneva

A spokesperson for the delegation of the Syrian opposition at the Geneva II conference accused the Syrian regime of stepping up the pace of violence, despite claiming it is taking part in Geneva in order to reach a peaceful solution to the crisis in the country.

Following the meeting that was held between the Syrian opposition with the United Nations and Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi in Geneva on Monday, Louay Safi said he held the Syrian government responsible for breaking the ceasefire in Homs.

Safi pointing out that both the international and the Red Cross missions were bombarded by forces related to the regime’s militia, leaving many dead or missing.

“In our meeting with Brahimi, we called for the end of all forms of violence, especially the violence that is being directed towards populous areas,” Safi said.

“We presented to Brahimi two reports prepared by the municipalities of Homs and Daria.” Both towns were bombed using more than 100 explosive barrels in the last two weeks. The reports describe the regime’s use of explosive barrels to bomb Syrian civilians as an international crime that must be put to an end.
