The Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon said on Wednesday that the State of Palestine’s accession to international conventions and treaties will enter into force on May 2, only 30 days after the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas signed formal requests to join them.
The UN chief’s remarks came after he had approved the Palestinian request to join 10 UN international conventions and treaties and distributed them to all member states.
The organisations Palestine is joining:
- Four Geneva Conventions
- First Additional Protocol on the Protection of Victims of International Armed Conflicts
- The Hague Convention (IV) respecting the Laws and Customs of War on Land and its annex: Regulations Concerning the Laws and Customs of War on Land
- The International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid
- The United Nations Convention against Corruption
- The Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment
- The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination
- The Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties
- The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
- The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women
- The Convention on the Rights of the Child
- The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in armed conflict
- The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations
- Vienna Convention on Consular Relations
- International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
- The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
