Opposition claims Assad has lost control of two-thirds of Syria

The National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces claimed on Sunday that forces loyal to President Bashar Al-Assad have suffered heavy losses during the country’s three years of civil war.

The opposition group said that the Syrian army has lost control of nearly 67 per cent of its territory. Around 70 per cent of Assad’s soldiers have either been killed or have deserted, it is claimed.

The coalition’s legal committee released the details in a report during a conference held at its Cairo headquarters. It pointed out that of the army’s 300,000 soldiers at least 113,000 have been killed while there are an estimated 100,000 deserters.

According to the report, Al-Assad’s regime has lost 145 of its original 223 helicopters as well as 157 of its 227 other military aircraft.
