US has evidence of chemical attack in Syria

The US has evidence that a toxic chemical substance, probably chlorine, may have been used in Syria this month and is examining evidence whether the Syrian government is responsible; a State Department official said yesterday.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said: “We have indications of the use of a toxic industrial chemical. We are examining allegations that the government was responsible.”

Yesterday, Syrian opposition activists reported that several civilians suffered from suffocation in the town of Telmns, south of Idlib, after regime helicopters threw explosive barrels loaded with poisonous gas, believed to be chlorine, on the town.
