Libya announces date for parliamentary elections

Libya’s electoral commission announced on Tuesday that elections will take place on June 25 to elect a new General National Congress, the LANA state news agency has reported.

According to the agency, the head of the commission, Emad al-Sayeh, said that he had informed the Presidency of the General National Congress of the date.

Turkey’s Anadolu news agency, however, quoted a member of the commission’s board of directors as saying that MPs have asked the board to try and expedite the voting day and assigned June 25 as polling day without referring to the commission. “In any case, the situation on the ground suggests that the ballot is highly unlikely to take place on this day,” he claimed. The source said that the date is not finalised in light of the current security situation in the country.
