UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on political leaders in Iraq to form an “inclusive” government representing all the political blocs, and which reflects the national spirit of Iraq.
He also stressed on a road map to find a long-term solution in the country, in cooperation between the central government and the region of northern Iraq.
In a report submitted to the UN Security Council, Ban stressed that sanctions should be imposed on the Islamic State (ISIS), and for “terrorist organisations” not to be allowed to take part in democracy in Iraq.
The secretary-general appealed to all Member States of the United Nations – and especially the Iraq’s neighbours – to support Iraq, and the fight against terrorism, and the preservation of the lives of civilians.
Ban warned of a “new danger” emerging as ISIS may use water sources, the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, as weapons of war.
