Egypt congratulates new Iraqi government

Egypt welcomed the formation of the new Iraqi government, headed by Haider Al-Abadi, after gaining the confidence of the Iraqi parliament, calling it “a positive step on the road to engage all the forces of Iraqi society in governance and building Iraq’s future”.

In a statement issued by the spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Badr Abdel-Atti, a copy of which was received by the Anadolu news agency today, he said: “The formation of the new Iraqi government is a positive step on the road to engage all the forces of society in governance, and in building Iraq’s future, and the return of this brotherly nation to its position as a leading Arab power which is influential in the region.”

He continued that his government was looking forward to cooperation between Egypt and Iraq in the future, “especially in light of the common regional challenges faced by the Arab world, especially in the fight against terrorism. As well as the importance of achieving the ambitions and aspirations of the peoples in the Levant region, which is impeded by existing conflicts which threaten the cohesion of the countries in the region, and represent a threat to Arab national security and regional stability in general.”

The new Iraqi government was sworn in yesterday, after gaining the confidence of the House of Representatives.

The government was put together at a time when the country is locked in fierce battles to regain land seized by the militants of the Islamic State (IS) which began in June.
