British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon arrived in Kuwait on Thursday for a one-day visit, travelling from Irbil in the north of Iraq, diplomatic sources told Anadolu news agency.
The sources, who preferred to remain anonymous, said that Fallon would be discussing the current developments in the region with Kuwaiti officials, especially the war against the Islamic State (ISIS).
According to the sources, the British official would also be discussing bilateral relations between the two countries and the means to further develop them; however, they did not mention any details in this regard or which officials he would be meeting with.
Anadolu reported that Fallon met on Wednesday with the president of the Kurdistan regional government, Masoud Barzani, and praised the Peshmerga fighters on their confrontations with ISIS, telling them that they would “eliminate ISIS heroically and courageously”.
He also noted that the humanitarian and military aid provided by his country to Kurdistan would continue, and that Britain is also planning to train the Peshmerga forces.
Earlier, Fallon met with Iraqi officials in Baghdad to discuss what Britain could do to support the fight against ISIS. He later announced the deployment of extra military advisers to help train Iraqi forces.
The Guardian newspaper quoted Fallon as saying that it would be “a very limited mission”.
