Egypt recloses Rafah Crossing

Local Palestinian sources said that the Egyptian authorities had closed the Rafah Crossing until further notice, Al-Resalah newspaper reported yesterday.

On Sunday morning, Egypt opened the crossing for Palestinians entering Gaza but did not allow anyone from the Strip to leave, even patients and students.

According to the sources, 554 Palestinians entered Gaza through the crossing.

Since the military coup in Egypt on June 30, 2013, Egypt has been closing the crossing; it intermittently opens it and allows a few people to leave.

During the recent 51-day Israeli war on Gaza, Egypt kept the crossing closed and did not allow any of the wounded to leave. It stopped aid from entering the Strip, including construction material for emergency infrastructure projects being carried out by Qatar.

Since October 24, when more than 30 Egyptian soldiers were killed in a blast in Sinai, the Egyptian authorities completely closed the crossing. However, it re-opened the crossing for two days to allow Gazans stuck in Egypt to return home.
