'We are on the road to making the Palestinian cause an international one'

Palestine’s acceptance as an observer at the International Criminal Court (ICC) is a step in the direction of obtaining full membership in the organisation and all international groups, a member of Fatah said.

Fatah Central Committee member Mohamed Ashtieh, who is also a member of the Palestinian negotiating team, told the Anadolu Agency: “We are on the road to making the Palestinian cause an international one at all organisational levels. We are moving in this direction step by step.”

He considered this achievement to be a stepping stone to the next move at the ICC and to seeking membership at all other international organisations, noting that the latest achievement will have a positive impact on the European Parliament’s upcoming vote over the recognition of the Palestinian state. The vote will be held on December 18.

Ashtieh said that the Palestinian leadership is currently knocking on the doors of all international organisations, parliaments, governments and UN bodies, seeking recognition of Palestine and the attainment of its rights.

He affirmed that the Palestinian leadership is insisting on presenting the UN Security Council draft resolution, without specifying a date for discussing it.

In mid-October, Palestine distributed a draft resolution to the 15 Security Council members in preparation for presenting the draft resolution officially to the Security Council. The draft resolution aims to set a date for the end of the Israeli occupation on the Palestinian territories and the establishment of a Palestinian state.
