Egypt to build central prison in Damietta

The Executive Council of Egypt’s Damietta province has agreed to construct a central prison in the city to hold anti-regime rebels and activists.

The council decided to allocate a plot of land that spreads over an area of more than 33,000 square metres owned by the city council.

In December 2013, former interim President Adly Mansour issued a presidential decree to establish new prisons and to allocate properties and lands owned by the police force towards this purpose.

The decree said: “The Ministry of Interior Projects Fund is entitled to sell prison land and to use funds generated from the sale in the construction of and for equipping new prisons or exploiting these lands in the establishment of new police facilities.”

Egypt opened a new central prison in Giza at the end of December last year.
