Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi yesterday approved 17 new governors to run provinces; the majority of whom are army officers, official source said.

The final list of governors was presented to Al-Sisi by Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab earlier in the day.

Presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef said the new governors are scheduled to take office on Sunday.

The governors’ reshuffle comes nearly a month before Egyptian parliamentary elections are due to take place.

The country’s general elections, due on 21 March, are organised according to a law passed by former interim president Adly Mansour only a day before President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi took power in June 2014.

According to the new law, the parliament includes 567-seats, 420 members of parliament are elected based on the individual system and 120 are elected based on the list system while the President appoints the remaining 27 members of parliament.
