Cyprus and Egypt discuss energy cooperation

The Minister of Energy, Industry, Tourism and Trade for Cyprus has arrived in Cairo to discuss energy cooperation with his Egyptian counterparts. Giorgos Akatrubis will look at ways to boost the export of natural gas from Cyprus to Egypt, Anadolu has reported.

Egypt suffers from a deficit in gas destined for the domestic market. Its production of natural gas has fallen to 4.8 billion cubic feet compared with 6 billion cubic feet at the end of 2012.

The North African country suffers from frequent power cuts, especially during the summer when there is increased demand due to the widespread use of air conditioning units. Domestic and business users are affected by the electricity shortage caused by a lack of gas to fuel Egypt’s power stations.
