Egypt plans to use a large share of the natural gas imported from Greek Cyprus to supply the liquefaction plant in the city of Edko, northwest of Cairo, an official in the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum said yesterday.
According to the official, the liquefaction project which consists of two factories has partially stopped working due to a lack of natural gas needed to operate the plant.
The Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) said earlier that the liquefaction plant receives only 100 million cubic feet of the gas out of the 650 million feet needed to operate it.
Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum Sherif Ismail announced yesterday that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Cyprus to develop several Cypriot natural gas discoveries for six months, and to import natural gas.
According to a cabinet statement, the MoU allows EGAS and Cyprus Hydrocarbons Company to study the technical solutions to transport gas through a direct marine pipeline from the Aphrodite field to Egypt.
