EU Parliamentary delegation to visit imprisoned PLC Speaker next month

A representative of the European-Greens Free Alliance, Elisabet Nebreda, has said that the European Parliament rejects the continued imprisonment of the speaker of Aziz Dweik, the Palestinian Legislative Council, saying her party stands in solidarity with their fellow parliamentarians in Israeli jails.

During a telephone call on Tuesday with Palestinian MP Mushir Al-Masri, who heads an international campaign to release imprisoned Palestinian MPs, Nebreda stressed that Israel’s continued arrest of several Palestinian MPs is a “clear violation of all international norms and conventions”.

Nebreda revealed that a delegation from the European Parliament will visit the Palestinian territories and intends to meet Dweik in prison during the first week of June.

The visit agenda also includes meetings with MPs who were released from Israeli jails, she said.

Meanwhile, Al-Masri called on the European Parliament and international community to stop Israeli violations against Palestinian MPs and to work to secure their immediate release from Israeli jails.

An Israeli court on Monday sentenced Dweik to one year in prison and a fine of 6,000 shekels ($1,500).

Israeli forces have also imprisoned a further 11 deputies, mostly affiliated with the political arm of Hamas.
