Egypt sentences Brotherhood leaders, army officers over coup attempt

Egypt has sentenced former parliamentarian Helmi Al-Jazzar and 24 army officers for attempting to overthrow the government, Pls48.net reported journalist Haitham Khalil saying yesterday.

During his talk show Al-Sharq, Khalil said that 18 army officers were already in prison while a further six had evaded capture.

Al-Jazzar and ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, both Muslim Brotherhood leaders, were also sentenced.

According to Khalil, the case is fake and aims to quell army members who oppose the coup, and is punishment for officers who supported January 25 revolution.

The 26 culprits were accused, Khalil said, of “planning a military coup, attempting to forcefully change the constitution, dominating sovereign institutions, joining the Muslim Brotherhood and disclosing military secrets.”
