Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir has publically mocked the International Criminal Court’s judicial role saying the Hague-based body died long ago and the African Union Summit is its burial ceremony.
In exclusive remarks to Turkey’s Anadolu Agency, Al-Bashir said African leaders “refuse guardianship and they are masters of their decisions”. He expressed satisfaction with his participation in the 25th African Union summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Sudanese president described his country’s relations with South Africa and the African Union as “excellent”.
His remarks come amid reports claiming a South African court has banned Al-Bashir from leaving the country pending a decision on whether he should be arrested.
Al-Bashir is wanted for alleged war crimes by the International Criminal Court for his complicity in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in Darfur.
