French National Assembly yesterday voted in favour of a protocol for mutual judicial assistance between France and Morocco signed earlier this year.
Both socialist and right-wing lawmakers voted in favour of the bill.
Former education minister and president of the Franco-Moroccan Friendship Association, Luc Chatel, praised the decision saying it “puts an end to a series of events that angered Morocco”.
In January, a new judicial cooperation agreement was signed that ended a dispute that has damaged much of “exceptional partnership” between the two countries.
Officials from both countries held several meetings; the most important was a visit by Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane to Paris in May which contributed to hastening the reconciliation between the two countries.
French Minister of State for Development and Francophony, Annick Girardin, told parliament: “Morocco is a friend and ally of France against terrorism. Both Morocco and France need each other more than ever.”
