Dismissed Fatah leader Mohamed Dahlan yesterdya accused the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Fatah President Mahmoud Abbas of attempting to destroy the last effective Palestinian institution, Quds Press reported.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Dahlan criticised Abbas over his resignation along with nine others from the PLO’s Executive Committee in order to form a new board.
“Our issue now is to have a historical stance against Mahmoud Abbas, who has started to carry out a coup in order to get rid of the national institutions and the remaining mechanisms of the Palestinian political action,” Dahlan said.
“It is a clear attempt to destroy the leadership frame which is able to hold him accountable and deter him,” he added.
Dahlan said Abbas does not want to reinforce the Palestinian National Council, but he aims to “get rid of all opposition voices and all restrictions and monitors, who are looking at his political, legal and financial crimes.”
He accused Abbas of disabling the PLO institutions and trying to find a “safe exit” for himself by dismantling the leadership institutions and assigning people who are not opposing him.
As a solution to the current PLO crisis, Dahlan called for all historical Fatah and PLO leaders to stand together and contact Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other parties in order to “undermine the eminent disaster”.
He called for them to form a “united front based on national agreement” to reform the PLO and include representatives from all Palestinian factions.
