The head of Libya’s General National Congress (GNC) delegation to the UN-brokered dialogue talks has resigned. Saleh Makhzoum’s resignation came just a day before the scheduled start of a new round of negotiations.
According to the Libyan news agency, the GNC’s second deputy president pulled out following deep disagreements with the congress president, Nouri Abu-Sahmain, who called for the negotiator’s resignation.
Earlier on Tuesday, Abu-Sahmain sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General’s envoy, Bernardino Leon, in which he stressed the GNC’s commitment to the required concessions. He noted the possibility of developing a mechanism quickly that will fulfil the objectives of the UN mission in Libya to form a national unity government which serves all citizens.
