Egypt’s buffer zone will displace Rafah residents, claims Palestinian official

A Palestinian official in the Gaza Strip has warned that the buffer zone created by the Egyptian army near the shared border is the beginning of a series of disasters which will fall on the southern town of Rafah.

The Mayor of Rafah, Subhi Abu Radwan, told a public meeting on Tuesday that the governorate will witness fundamental changes in population and agricultural distribution in the province because of this project.

“We could find ourselves forced to intervene and evacuate the population,” he explained, “especially from the areas adjacent to the border to preserve them the suffering of having to watch the collapse of their properties, homes and agricultural lands.”

Abu Radwan revealed that several buildings have collapsed and land has subsided on the Palestinian side of the border, which has been closed as a danger to the life and limb of local citizens. He pointed out that the main centre for sewage services and water drainage is located within the border area which makes these services also liable to collapse at any moment.
