A member of the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group was killed in a raid by security forces in northern Egypt, the Interior Ministry said in a Sunday statement.
According to the ministry, the Brotherhood member “fell from a window” while trying to escape after security forces raided his apartment in the coastal city of Alexandria.
The ministry went on to allege that a cache of weapons had been found in his apartment.
It also asserted that the Brotherhood member had been accused of involvement in a series of past attacks in Egypt’s central Fayoum province.
The Egyptian government designated the Brotherhood, the country’s oldest Islamist movement, a “terrorist organisation” in late 2013.
Security forces have launched a harsh crackdown on the Brotherhood since Egypt’s military ousted and imprisoned democratically-elected President Mohamed Morsi – a Brotherhood leader – in mid-2013.
In the more than two years since, the security forces have killed hundreds – and detained tens of thousands – of Brotherhood members and Morsi supporters.
Last month, 13 Brotherhood members were killed by Egyptian security forces in two separate raids.
The London-based Human Rights Monitor said last month that 79 civilians had been killed in August alone in extrajudicial killings carried out by Egyptian security forces.
