As much as 50 per cent of Egypt’s textile factories have completely stopped working while the other half suffer major problems, a senior official in the industry has revealed.
Abdel Fattah Ibrahim, the President of the General Union of Textile Workers, also pointed out that the Cotton Committee formed by former Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab to save the country’s textile industry has stopped working since Mahlab left office.
Ibrahim, who was promoted to President of the state-controlled Egyptian Trade Union Federation in 2013, said in a statement on Wednesday that nearly 150,000 workers have lost their jobs in the 2,400 factories which have closed down.
