Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez yesterday called on the international community to provide protection for the Palestinian people from Israeli attacks, saying “what is happening in Palestine is a tragedy and an aggression by the Israeli occupation and not a conflict”.

The minister’s remarks came in a special statement on the sidelines of the Summit of South American-Arab Countries which kicked off Monday evening in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

Rodriguez stressed that her country’s position on the Palestinian- Israeli conflict remains unchanged which is “the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, living side by side with Israel,” adding that Venezuela “is following with great concern the Israelis attacks on the Palestinians”.

The minister expressed her country’s great concern for the tragic situations in Syria, Libya and Yemen stressing on the importance of “supporting and assisting the peoples of these countries to establish a solid platform to overcome the crises and conflicts in their countries and bring peace and stability.”

“Differences cannot be resolved with rifles and fighting,” the minister said, noting that her country can play a positive role through its good relations with many Arab countries to help them overcome conflicts which threaten their unity and sovereignty.”

“Venezuela has recorded a reservation to any interference from any party whatsoever, with respect to the internal affairs of these countries,” she said.

Rodriguez explained that she was satisfied with the convergence between Latin American countries and Arab states, noting that “such a large bloc will become the century’s surprise politically and economically”.

She revealed that her country and Saudi Arabia are discussing ways to adjust oil prices.
